Florida Homeowners Now Have A Better Shade Option for Screen Enclosures

pool enclosure

The one architectural structure that you’ll have a difficult time finding outside of Florida is the aluminum screened enclosure…commonly referred to as a pool cage or pool enclosure. These structures offer some important benefits to Florida homeowners. They keep out bugs…particularly the seasonal lovebugs that plague our state once a year. They also prevent lizards and other reptiles from invading out recreational spaces. Various screening options can offer some privacy and help keep dirt and debris from making its way into our pools, patios, and homes.

As beneficial as these structures are, there is one thing they do not provide….shade from the Florida sun. Floridians love to enjoy their pools during the hot summer months but quite often they are driven inside by the heat and humidity. Aluminum contractors and screening companies discourage the use of Florida glass or shaded screening in the roof areas of the enclosures. Unfortunately, there are very few options for getting shade in your screened enclosure.

How About Umbrellas

Patio umbrellas are a decent option for getting some shade and relief from the Florida sun. However, they have their drawbacks. First, unless you spend a lot of money for a good quality Sunbrella marine canvas umbrella, your umbrella is going to fade and you'll be shelling out another $100 to $300 every couple of years. Umbrella stands can also be bulky, take up precious and sometimes limited real estate on the pool deck, and leave water and dirt spots on your pool deck. Umbrellas also offer a limited amount of shade which is not cool (no pun intended) for your guests if you like to entertain large groups around your pool area. While umbrellas do have their own appealing look, are they really the best option for getting shade in your pool cage or screened enclosure?

retractable awning

What about Awnings?

Retractable awnings have been around for a long time and can be good for getting shade in some spaces. However, besides being very expensive, they have a major limitations when it comes to getting shade where you want it. Retractable awnings are attached to your home and they can only reach so far. They may not give you the option to get shade over areas of your pool or lounging spaces further away from your house. So, if you're looking to escape the sun, you're confined to the area which the awning can cover.
